gem1 affects post-meiotic cytokinesis of the microspore at pollen mitosis I, causing altered cell division asymmetry and cell fate. Equal daughter cells resulting from symmetric division at pollen mitosis I both show vegetative cell fate. This produces mature pollen with two 'vegetative' cells and no generative or sperm cells. About 20% of pollen from heterozygote plants show aberrant division phenotypes.

These ldw1 seeds have been produced by a ldw1 mutant in a population of F3 plants coming from an outcross between the original ldw1 mutant and a Columbia-0 plant.
Phenotype
ldw1 is a lesion-mimic, dwarf mutant. It shows necrosis on the cotyledons and leaves. Its leaves are stunted, with a curved laminar shape, and present a denser concentration of trichomes, compared to a wild-type. The phenotype can be variable between ldw1 individuals. The size of the plant varies, as well as the size and the pattern of the necrosis.

The mutation was derived from the CT17 line of the INRA Versailles collection and received by J. Traas. CT17 was back-crossed to wild type WS. One of the F2 progenies, CT17-7, heterozygous for the csld3 mutation was used to obtain a homozygous line.
Phenotype
The csld# mutation causes a root hair phenotype. Root hair patterning is correct but root hair growth is affected. Root hairs are initiated at the correct positions, they grow into a bulge, subsequent elongation is severely affected visible by a reduced length.AJ297948 is a genomic clone containing the entire CSLD3 gene including the full promotor of 1200 bp.
